Where strange fact and stranger fiction collide
Here at Geek Obscura we tend to highlight geeky things new geeks may not have heard of, but today we are going to feature something that has yet to come out. That is DC God and Monsters. Though released in July I am amazed there is not more buzz about this one. Want to shout out to my friend Matt wall who first tipped me off to this.
Before you read this check out the following videos, warning they are rated PG-13
Holy Crap! Batman is a vampire, Harley Quinn (Voiced by the incredible Tara Strong) is truly a homicidal maniac, Amanda Waller is the president, Superman is sporting a goatee, Brainiac is a blue skinned kid with pistons in his skull, Giganta is a killer giant robot, Wonder Owman is a New God, and Steve Trevor is her worn out sex kitten. Can I please have some more?
Oh and did I mention that this is the brainchild of Bruce Timm, the creative genius who brought us Batman the Animated Series and created the Harley Quinn chachters. He has made Batman in this universe no billionaire Bruce Wayne but scientist Kurt Langstrom. In the traditional DC world his serum turned him in to Man-bat, in this world it made his a vampire. Superman is the son of Zod, and is rocking some awesome facial hair. Wonder Woman besides being hyper sexually aggressive (Which might ruin the whole project if not handled respectfully), is a New God.
Here is the official press release.
Journey to a divergent reality where the Justice League protects the planet — but answers to no one but themselves. Employing methods of intimidation and fear, this Superman, Batman and Wonder Woman deal brute force in the name of justice. In this alternate universe, Superman was not raised by the Kents in Smallville, the Caped Crusader is not Bruce Wayne, and Wonder Woman is not an Amazon warrior of Themyscira. When a group of famed scientists experience untimely “accidents,” a government task force follows the trail of clues to the Justice League — but is there a more powerful player operating from the shadows? It’s a high stakes game of intrigue, mystery and action that asks the question: How do you serve justice to those above the law.
These three episodes are setting up for next month’s movie. Which I am going to get. To be honest when super Man scratched that message on to the bomber’s cockpit window I got chill. That sceen alone is worth checking this out further.
In addition to the movie there will be ten shorts released for next season focusing on alternative DC heroes. Though Timm has said he will focus on minor characters other than main heroes like Aqua Man and Flash. Though an Aquaman based on H.P. Lovecraft’s Deep Ones would rock. (Did I just use the words Aqua Man and Would Rock in the same sentence?)
I got into comics in the 80’s and 90’ when ‘darker and grittier ‘ was the mantra. Well we may have just hit the apex of “D&G” And Else Worlds were the height of DC’s yearly releases. I love alt worlds because you can play known characters. This isn’t supposed to be the heroes we know and love these are someone else, but with plenty of DC Easter Eggs.
Oh and the fact that they chose the Title form the song of one of my favorite modern singers Lana Del Rey. (Note this song is R rated)
For a more SFW here is less talented Jessica Lang sing a TV version song.
In addition to the movie there will be a comic book prequel, as well as more shorts. I could see it opening wide up. In my opinion DC is way behind the curve on movies against Marvel. But as always had an A game when it came to animated episodes. This is another feather in their cap.
I have always thought that between Marvel and DC I prefer indy publishers. But with JL:: Gods and Monsters, there new Bombshells, and the Suicide Squad Movie, maybe DC will move up in my opinion.
